Castro Theatre tickets & upcoming events

The Castro Theatre is an absolute San Francisco icon, and honestly, it’s hard to talk about the city’s cinematic history without mentioning this place. Opened in 1922, it’s got that vintage charm that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. It’s not just a pretty face though – the theatre has played a pivotal role in pushing social boundaries, especially in the 1970s when it hosted the first LGBTQ film festival, making it a hub for queer cinema and activism. And if you’re into cult classics, the weekly Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings are legendary, with audiences dressed up and singing along like it’s a tradition. The venue’s interior is a feast for the eyes, ornate murals, intricate ceiling designs, and those private boxes that give you a perfect view of the whole room. Honestly, sitting in those boxes feels like you’re part of the show. The theatre also hosts the San Francisco International Film Festival, which has been a staple since the mid-1950s, cementing its status as a major player in the film scene. Planning to catch a movie? Consider taking a rideshare to dodge parking headaches because the place can get pretty crowded during peak times. Whether you're there for a classic film, a cultural event, or just the unique ambiance, the Castro Theatre promises an experience that’s as memorable as the movies it shows.
